Upstream: Strategy & Organization
University Lands, a department of the University of Texas System’s Office of Business Affairs, manages the Permanent University Fund lands and all operations therein. University Lands’ operations include both the mineral interests and surface rights for approximately 2.1 million acres, primarily in the heart of the Permian Basin. Recognizing the potential of the land assets, University Lands engaged Opportune to provide a comprehensive strategic study comparing the effectiveness and efficiency of the Department’s operations to those of other public and private organizations involved in similar operations. Opportune then recommended value-added improvements to the Department’s business practices and processes.
Opportune analyzed University Lands’ current asset portfolio, evaluated the current market, and identified areas of opportunity. In addition, Opportune conducted a compensation analysis for current staff levels and comparable staff positions in the Midland job market. Opportune provided a range of recommendations covering organizational vision and structure, as well as short- and long-term business activities. The recommendations were presented to an advisory board for final decisions. Opportune continues to provide ongoing strategic consulting to University Lands.
