Professional Experience
Dave is a Managing Director of Opportune and runs our tax practice. Dave has over 25 years of corporate tax and finance experience with Fortune 500 and mid-cap, publicly held energy companies and public accounting firms.
Prior to joining Opportune, Dave was senior vice president of tax and treasury at an S&P 600 oil services firm and was previously vice president of tax planning and structured finance at a Fortune 50 integrated energy company. Dave began his career with the Houston office of PricewaterhouseCoopers.
Dave received his B.B.A. in accounting from the McCombs School at the University of Texas at Austin, his M.S. in taxation from the University of Houston’s Bauer College of Business, and his J.D. from the University of Houston Law Center. He is licensed by the State Bar of Texas, the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy, and is also a Certified Valuation Analyst. Dave is active in a variety of professional and nonprofit organizations, including the Houston Bar Association, the Texas Society of CPAs, the Tax Executives Institute and Houston Grand Opera.

Representative Projects
- Provided tax support and transaction structuring services for a variety of domestic and international energy-related acquisitions and divestitures in the areas of conventional and renewable energy generation, oil and gas exploration and production, oil field services, natural gas transportation and processing, and energy trading.
- Resolved complicated, multi-jurisdictional tax, legal and operational issues to implement international holding company and intellectual property migration structures for a multinational energy technology company.
- Completely mitigated a tax-related material weakness for a publicly-traded international oil services company through a project involving the design and implementation of new tax accounting and filing systems.
- Provided tax consulting services to a $300 million limited partnership involved in the management of power generation assets and load serving obligations in the U.S. wholesale markets.
- Led a project team responsible for the design and execution of a $1 billion tax–advantaged refinancing of corporate real estate assets.
- Structured and obtained a private letter ruling for an $850 million like-kind exchange transaction involving interstate pipeline assets.
- Provided tax consulting services to a $150 million limited partnership organized to pursue biodiesel and other biofuel marketing and trading opportunities, and the construction and operation of facilities to produce and market biodiesel and other biofuels.
- Engaged by a major international engineering and construction company to assist with the investigation of potential multi-year violations of U.S. tax and immigration laws.
- Engaged by an independent sales organization to prepare a damages report and to provide court testimony in litigation involving disputed fees with a national commercial bank.
- Engaged to prepare a valuation report and to provide court testimony in a case involving a disputed equity interest in a privately-held oil services company.
