Professional Experience

Kurt holds the position of Managing Director at Opportune LLP.  Kurt has over 18 years of diverse, energy supply, pipelines, trading and risk management experience gained through operational, strategic, and consulting roles with public and private companies.  His career has focused on enabling operational excellence through strategic technology planning and execution and improvement of technology-enabled business solutions.   Prior to joining Opportune, Kurt worked 4 years as Director of Crude and Products Trading Systems for Barclays Capital and Duke Energy, 8 years as a senior manager in Accenture’s Energy Trading and Risk Management  (ETRM) Practice, and 4 years as owner of a successful software consulting firm serving the energy and healthcare industries.

Kurt has consulted in many areas of the energy industry (E&P, trading, refining, marketing, transportation and logistics) and with several types of commodities (physical and financial oil, natural gas, and NGL’s).   He is recognized for his balance of technical and functional expertise with the ability to build consensus around the most complex and challenging processes and organizations.

Representative Experience

  • Led the software selection for a large midstream gas and liquids processor with gathering, gas plant, storage, and pipeline systems across the United States.  The selection covered the business areas of ETRM, gas pipeline operations, and NGL pipeline and storage operations.
  • Led the selection and implementation of SolArc’s Right Angle S11.5 software with the Lease Center module for the second largest marketer of crude in the Baaken area.  The solution covered extensive lease gathering activities with truck, rail, pipeline, and storage logistics.
  • Led the selection and implementation of ESI’s Synthesis (formerly Entessa) release 9 software for a common stream crude pipeline company with extensive gathering, mainline, and storage activities in the Baaken area.  The solution covered nominations, ticketing, inventory tracking, charge calculations, invoice generations, and tariff management.
  • Developed a 1, 3, and 5 year technology roadmap (strategy, priorities, budgets, and resources) by working with the department heads of trading, logistics, risk, credit, settlements, and compliance.  The plan included the implementation of a leading ETRM software package for financial trading and risk aggregation, commodity specific systems for physical trading, scheduling, and settlement, and common corporate systems for general ledger, document management, risk and credit reporting, and compliance monitoring.  The strategy included internal systems as well as integration with external parties including ICE, ISO’s/RTO’s and natural gas pipelines.
