Opportune in the Community
It is our mission to aid a variety of diverse organizations by contributing our time and financial resources to create a place to live that we are all proud to call home. We believe that by giving to several organizations, we are able to assist in increasing the quality of life for the citizens of the city, county and surrounding areas.
paul bear bryant awards
Clemson University Head Coach Dabo Swinney earned his third Paul Bear Bryant Coach of the Year Award in four years and, as a proud sponsor, Opportune celebrated with an unforgettable Pat Green concert! Now in its 33rd year, the Coach of the year Award recognizes the country’s top college football coach for their contributions both on and off the field.
Junior achievement bowl-a-thon
Junior Achievement’s (JA) Bowl-A-Thon is their largest peer-to-peer fundraiser. Opportune participants created teams, raised funds and celebrated their fundraising efforts at a fun, interactive bowling event hosted by JA.
For our second annual TV-themed Bowl-A-Thon, Opportune’s combined sponsorship and online fundraising totaled over $38,000! These funds will enable JA to reach over 280,000 students in the greater Houston area this school year. The donations we received make a direct impact in the lives of so many students: $100 provides funding for JA programs for four students; $250 provides funding for 10 students and $500 funds a whole classroom!
JA helps students realize that the education they are getting today will help them to have a bright future tomorrow. JA’s unique, volunteer-delivered programs show them all of the possibilities that lay before them. They realize they can choose different paths: college, a specific trade or start their own business. Through our impactful participation as an organization, the statistics below can begin to change in our community:
- 20% of U.S. students will not complete high school on time and earn a diploma
- 49% of U.S. employers recognize that talent shortages impact their ability to serve clients and customers
- 36% of Americans say that they have at some point in their lives felt their financial situation was out of control
- 91% of millennials wish they had greater access to entrepreneurial education programs

Junior achievement finance park
At Junior Achievement’s (JA) Finance Park, students are given a unique life profile that includes an income, marital status and even kids! Using this new adult persona, students worked with Opportune volunteers to create a balanced monthly budget while making decisions regarding housing, transportation, insurance, savings, entertainment expenses and much more.
Founded in 1919, JA is a non-profit youth organization with a stated mission of inspiring and preparing young people to succeed in a global economy. JA’s Finance Park program reaches more than 4.8 million students nationally and JA programs are taught by volunteers in all 50 states. JA of Southeast Texas reaches about 306,445 students per year.
Dress for success houston
As a part of giving back to the community, Opportune sent volunteers to work at Dress for Success Houston. The mission of Dress for Success Houston is to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and development tools to help women in work and life. We helped out in the Dress for Success warehouse by sorting inventory for the non-profit.
The Forge for Families
The Forge for Families has a unique approach to assisting families in need and making a difference in the lives of Houston’s Third Ward community. They created the “Holly Jolly Christmas Store”, which is set up to assist low-income families by providing toys for their children. The new toys are marked at garage sale prices and parents are invited to come and shop in a beautiful Christmas atmosphere. Thus, on Christmas morning, the parents experience the joy of knowing they have given their children gifts that were specifically chosen and purchased for them. Opportune was one of nine companies to donate to The Forge’s Holly Jolly Christmas Store in 2017. According to their Director of Development, it was “the Holly Jolly Christmas Store ever!” We plan to participate again in 2018.
Buffalo Bayou Cleanup
Opportune volunteers eagerly helped shovel away muck and debris that smothered trees left after Hurricane Harvey swept through the city. In all, we cleared over a dozen trees. Buffalo Bayou Partnership Volunteer Coordinator Leticia Sierras was incredibly grateful and we all enjoyed ourselves (even when we could not move the next day).
Travis Frederick's Blocking Out Hunger Foundation
Opportune partner, Matt Flanagan, first introduced the non-profit organization, The Travis Frederick’s Blocking Out Hunger Foundation, to Opportune in 2016. The foundation was created by the starting Dallas Cowboy center, Travis Frederick, and focuses on providing support to inner-city and low-income children throughout Dallas and the surrounding metroplex. Travis, who has a vibrant passion for helping hungry kids in our community, has a personal goal to provide more than 50,000 meals to at-risk Dallas-area children by the end of 2018.
The hunger problem is real; especially in Texas. Last year, there were more than 4.65 million Texans – including nearly 1.9 million children – who had limited or uncertain access to enough food for a healthy lifestyle.
During its first year of existence, the foundation has donated a truck full of food for the Tarrant Area Food Bank, raised money to support the cause through various events, and has recently kicked off the Nourish2Flourish “Summer Giveaway” program which will provide 200 kids with a meal a week over the summer break.
The foundation’s Executive Board consists of 25 forward-thinking senior business executives and community leaders whose role is to enhance the organization’s public standing and champion the foundation’s mission and accomplishments to the public. Opportune's Managing Director, Drew Lockard, proudly serves on the board of this great organization. Opportune is proud to be involved and support the Dallas community.
