A U.S. multinational financial services company, acting as the lead for a lender group, required an independent technical validation of a pure-play Eagle Ford operator’s asset base during a high-stakes restructuring. The primary goal was to assess the accuracy of the borrower’s reserve projections and future production estimates to ensure the lender group could make informed decisions throughout the bankruptcy process.
The client faced significant commodities price volatility and technical uncertainties regarding the operator's over-leveraged position. They needed a partner with deep senior-level expertise in energy who could bridge the gap between technical geosciences and financial restructuring. Opportune and its in-house engineering firm, Ralph E. Davis Associates (RED), were uniquely qualified to provide the forensic rigor necessary to challenge the operator's internal Aries database and Aries-based forecasts.
Opportune rapidly deployed its integrated Reserve Engineering & Geosciences team to execute a two-phase technical audit. In the initial phase, RED experts modeled and optimized proved developed producing (PDP) forecasts, meticulously assessing terminal decline rates, "b factors," and concentration risks. We ensured that all commercial parameters—including operating expenses and severance taxes—were consistent with actual field performance rather than optimistic projections.
In the second phase, Opportune structured and implemented an independent evaluation of proved undeveloped (PUD) locations. Using proprietary type well profile systems, RED developed independent type curves to challenge the operator’s overstated recovery estimates. This high-level technical and financial analysis revealed that the company had significantly underestimated future operating costs. By integrating these findings into the financial model, our Restructuring team provided the client-centric benefit of a realistic valuation, enabling the lenders to navigate the bankruptcy process with a clear understanding of asset-specific risks.
