Junior Achievement Annual Business Meeting Hosted by Opportune

Opportune was proud to sponsor the Annual Business Meeting for Junior Achievement (JA) of Southeast Texas' Board of Directors in Houston in June 2019. Opportune is committed to investing in the youth of our community and preparing them with work readiness, entrepreneurship and the financial literacy necessary to succeed in a global economy. By empowering students with the skills of leadership development, career awareness, character development, money management, STEM exploration and perseverance, we make a positive impact that inspires and prepares our future leaders for success in the 21st century. With 109 local JA Areas across the nation, JA is the largest organization in the U.S. dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need to own their economic success, plan for their futures and make smart academic and economic choices. More than 90 individuals represent a wide range of businesses and academic institutions from throughout the community and provide governance and leadership as members of the local JA of Southeast Texas board. In 2018, JA of Southeast Texas reached 327,602 students.Established in 1919 in Springfield, Massachusetts, JA celebrates in 2019 its 100th year of achievement. The non-profit organization has endured through the Great Depression, grew nationally with the expansion of the interstate highway system and globally with the advent of the jet age. As the economy moved from manufacturing to service, JA entered the nation's classrooms. It was one of the first organizations to bring computers into schools and ran global business simulations years before the creation of the Internet.Internationally, JA persevered through the changing tides of history, offering hope in the townships of South Africa, in defiance of apartheid; helped rebuild lives in Eastern Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall; gave young entrepreneurs the tools to navigate emerging economies around the world; and empowered young women in the face of those who seek to marginalize them.JA has reached 100 million people worldwide and has helped them become more likely finish school, earn a degree, start a business and escape poverty. Some may say this is work better left to those that are younger, newer to the scene and more innovative. But, it's difficult to make it this long without being innovative, adaptable and open to life-changing ideas. Because, when you start marking your age in centuries, it doesn't make you old, it makes you timeless.
